What Oil Should I Use in My FRL Unit?
Problem:
There seems to be much confusion about which oil is best fro mini filter, regulator lubricators. What weight of oil? What type of oil?
Its important to get it right because the vane style air motors run fast and the vanes come out under centrifugal force and rub on the inside of the body housing. Without adequate lubrication the motor will run hot and likely seize. Furthermore the vanes will start to chip and cause damage inside the air motor.
Solutions:
In regards to oil equivalent for the AD220 this is what we suggest to the customers.
If you do not want to buy the AD220 oil then use 10wt. SAE petroleum based detergent automotive motor oil may be used.
If you can not find a straight 10wt. SAE then we suggest using straight 20wt. SAE petroleum based detergent automotive motor oil.
If you can't find 10wt. or 20wt. oil then 10w30 SAE petroleum based detergent automotive motor oil may be used.
Stay away from synthetic oils for they break down and form a black grease substance in the unit.
Do NOT use hydraulic oil, power steering oil, vacuum pump oils or transmission oil for these have little to no lubricating properties.
If the unit is used in extreme cold conditions (below 32°F) then 5wt. SAE petroleum based detergent automotive motor oil may be used.
Certain food grade oils may be used such as White Rex 425 from Mobil, FMO-200AW & FMO-300-AW from Lubriplate Synac. These oils have been tested in the lab and work well.
NOTE:
Many people ask about the small ball bearing supplied with Mini FRL units. This is to be dropped into the top of the lubricator assembly after you have adjusted it correctly. This will stop unwanted adjustments. Use a magnet if you want to get it out.
